Your tooth enamel is composed of dense microscopic mineral crystals. Each day, the acidic foods and drinks you consume, as well as the natural bacteria in your mouth, can erode these microscopic structures. In time, a process known as demineralization can weaken tooth enamel, causing cavities and leading to heightened sensitivity in some of your teeth.

Exposing your teeth to fluoride helps refortify these microscopic minerals in a process known as remineralization. This effectively helps prevent sensitivity and tooth decay.

You should tell your dentist, Dr. Stephen A. Maniaci, if you suspect that your tooth decay and tooth sensitivity issues are related to insufficient fluoride. If they are, your dentist might recommend having a routine fluoride treatment in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. The procedure is quick and is performed once our team completes your routine dental checkup.

If you don’t have enough daily fluoride exposure, then your dentist might also prescribe daily fluoride supplements. There are several different types of fluoride supplements available, including sublingual tabs, gels, mouth rinse or a concentrated fluoride toothpaste.

Concentrated fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinse are very popular. It’s best to use them right before going to bed. Ideally, you want to apply them to your teeth at a time when you can avoid eating or drinking anything for 30 minutes to an hour. This will allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate into the microscopic pores in your tooth enamel.

If you have questions about fluoride supplements, or if you are overdue for your regular dental checkup, you can call Dr. Stephen A. Maniaci at 610-678-5858 to schedule an appointment.
